These permissions can now be\nincluded in general communication from the school; consent is now presumed and students\nneed to \u201copt out\u201d rather than \u201copt in\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DETAILS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As you are\naware, while a school may deliver&nbsp;<em>QuickSmart&nbsp;<\/em>instruction to whichever\nstudents it chooses, SiMERR may not receive student data from the schools\nwithout first gaining consent for their participation in the&nbsp;<em>QuickSmart&nbsp;<\/em>research\nproject. Following feedback from schools and consultation with the University\nof New England\u2019s Human Research Ethics Committee, the process for schools to\ngain this consent has now been made easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schools may now include\u00a0<em>QuickSmart\u00a0<\/em>research participation within their procedures for gaining Standing Parental Consent per 4.2.10 of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (ECHR) for the entire suite of <em>QuickSmart<\/em> programs*. That is, schools may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>include information regarding the\u00a0<em>QuickSmart\u00a0<\/em>research participation along with information about other school programs and activities circulated to parents for their consent; and<\/li><li>presume consent unless a parent or student communicates otherwise, that is, an opt out system.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ninformation given to parents should note:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>the\u00a0<em>QuickSmart<\/em>\u00a0Numeracy and Literacy programs provided by the school are linked to the\u00a0<em>QuickSmart\u00a0<\/em>in Schools research project conducted by the SiMERR National Research Centre at UNE;<\/li><li>the\u00a0<em>QuickSmart\u00a0<\/em>website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/simerr.une.edu.au\/quicksmart\/\">https:\/\/simerr.une.edu.au\/quicksmart\/<\/a>\u00a0can be visited for more information;<\/li><li>the\u00a0<em>QuickSmart<\/em>\u00a0in Schools research project collects student data in order to report on the      effectiveness of the\u00a0<em>QuickSmart\u00a0<\/em>programs; and<\/li><li>SiMERR does not report on individual student results or make public any personal information.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nconsent thus gained is then indicated by selecting&nbsp;<em>Consented<\/em>&nbsp;for\nthe student in the&nbsp;<em>QuickSmart&nbsp;<\/em>Portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will\nreduce your administrative burden in implementing&nbsp;<em>QuickSmart&nbsp;<\/em>and\nreduce barriers to getting students started in&nbsp;<em>QuickSmart<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*The <em>QuickSmart<\/em> suite of programs includes <em>QuickSmart <\/em>Numeracy, Literacy, Catch-Up Numeracy, FABS, Diagnostic Assessment and <em>QuickSmart<\/em>@Home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SUMMARY It is no longer necessary for schools to collect program consent and assent forms for QuickSmart and QuickSmart Comparison students.
