Description
This project attempts to address issues related to professional isolation experienced by science, mathematics and information and communication technology teachers in rural and regional areas. The focus is to create a network of teachers in the three subject areas in the north-west region of NSW supported by a three-way partnership among participating DET schools, curriculum advisors from the Department of Education and Training (NW Region), and academics from the newly established National Centre of Science, Information and Communication Technology, and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR).
The project will allow teachers to work within their own school groups on an issue that is educationally relevant to their particular teaching context (e.g., assessment practices, teaching processes, syllabus programming, subject knowledge). They will be supported to set about improving that issue and so enhance students’ learning outcomes in their subject area. This support will be provided by experienced practitioners (i.e., retired head teachers), staff from the Department of Education and Training, and academics from the University of New England. At specified times each year, teachers will meet to share their issues and strategies, discuss their problems, and identify the improvement generated.
